50 Commandments of Jesus
12. Practice Secret Disciplines—Matthew 6:1–18 - Part 3
Matthew 6:16-18
Fasting
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Good morning, Lord, You said "when" twice regarding all three of these acts: fasting, praying, and giving, there seems to be no "if" to any of these. Yet so often I pass on these for other choices: not spending time with You in prayer, investing in my pleasure and comfort rather than giving to the needy, and going long periods without a thought about fasting.
Please teach us to fast, we know You fasted, we know we should, please help us develop this discipline, not so we can get the fasting merit badge, but for the pure joy of time spent with You. Sustain us as we fast, take us where You want us to go in this act, we pray in Jesus name, amen.
