50 Commandments of Jesus
9. Go the Second Mile—Matthew 5:38–42
Matthew 5:38-42
An Eye for an Eye
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. ’ But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Good morning, Lord, please help us not use our "rights" wrongfully, but to honor You by following Your example, You were lead like a lamb to the slaughter and yet said nothing (Isaiah 53:7, Acts 8:32). Please help us be long suffering, patient, and kind, no matter what, for Your glory, and for the salvation of those who might attack or abuse. Amen.
Isaiah 53:7
He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
Acts 8:32-33
The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture:
“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb before the shearer is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.
Who can speak of his descendants?
For his life was taken from the earth.”
